Labour commissioner granted bail

ITANAGAR, Feb 9: Labour Commissioner Ojing Darung was today granted bail by Judicial First Class Magistrate in the land encroachment case. Darung was arrested yesterday from his office after High Court ordered for his arrest under section 3 of PDPP Act, which is a non-bailable offence.

The high drama involving arrest of Darung once again shows how fractured the Arunachal society is.

According to sources, government of Arunachal Pradesh was given lot of pressure to release Darung with warning that issue may take communal colour if labour commissioner is not released at the earliest. The incident also showed how much clout state politicians yield. Ministers, MLAs, MPs and various other politicians made beeline to ensure the release of labour commissioner. The capital administration has taken strong step by arresting him; however the law abiding citizens of capital will now expect them to take action against all the remaining land encroachers of capital. Their action will be watched carefully in the days to come.

Meanwhile, the Arunachal Law Students Union has appreciated capital administration for arresting labour commissioner. ALSU also urged administration to continue the drive and arrest all other land encroachers of capital irrespective of tribe and religion.

All Arunachal Pradesh Workers Union (AAPWU), in a hurriedly convened meeting today demanded re-arrest and suspension of Labour Commissioner Ojing Darung within 14 days failing which the union threatened to launch indefinite tools down and blackout throughout the capital complex.

While appreciating Capital DC, ADM-cum-CEO Talo Potom and Naharlagun Police for arresting Darung, the union has regretted that despite best efforts by the district administration to keep law equal for all but due to alleged tremendous pressure from few vested MLAs and cabinet ministers, who despite knowing the truth and court verdict ‘misused’ their power and position and interfered in court proceedings. “Not only that they tremendously pressurized CJM to initiate special session court on a Holiday (second Saturday),” AAPWU claimed.

AAPWU threatened to come out openly against such minister(s), who misuse their power and position to protect criminal(s) in future and requested them to refrain from such acts.

Terming the allegations leveled against it as baseless, AAPWU requested those unions to know the truth before going to press or leveling any such allegations in future.

“It was Court’s verdict who found Ojing Darung guilty under PDPP Act. AAPWU is not against any community or tribe but is against Darung, AAPWU alleged that the labour commissioner indulged in anti-labour activity by misusing his chair and non implementation of various welfare schemes under Labour Welfare Board meant for poor registered workers.

AAPWU requested those unions and organizations to work for betterment of the society not for any individual who has been acquainted guilty by session court and high court.

AAPWU also demanded immediate eviction of private building constructed in place of T-IV govt. quarter at D Sector within 14 days.

Our Correspondent adds from Pasighat: Adi Students Union (AdiSU), in an emergency meeting today proposed a series of democratic movements, including  protest rally in Itanagar and respective headquarters of  Adi inhabited areas to be followed by 12 hour bandh, if Darung is not released immediately.

The AdiSU, in support of various organizations staged a protest dharna in front of the East Siang DC’s office yesterday in protest against arrest of Darung. The Union claimed that Darung’s arrest was a pre-planned conspiracy to mentally harass him.

ALSU President Tadar Tarish cited the example of Tongam Rina case and stated that home ministry has failed to act swiftly in this case. “Instead of making any inroad into the case, government kept us fooling in regards to Rina case. They told people that case is being transferred to CBI but later it came out wrong. It happened because of the absence of independent home minister as there was no coordination among the officers of home ministry,” said Tarish.

ALSU threatened to launch series of agitation against state government if their demands are not meted out at the earliest.
